National Work Zone Awareness Week
This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week. In this blog we will put in to perspective how important it is to be cautious while driving in a work zone area. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation in 2009, there were over 2,000 work zone crashes and more than 4 out of 5 persons killed in work zone crashes were motorists.
The Department of Transportation sets guidelines to help ensure the safety of the workers as well as the motorists, be sure to abide by them. You may see signs such as; ROAD WORK AHEAD, KEEP LEFT, KEEP RIGHT, END ROAD WORK, BE PREPARED TO STOP, ETC. Other things to look for that will help you maneuver through road work zones safely are orange traffic cones, flashing lights and directional indicators.
Tips to Help Ensure the Safety of Motorists and Workers:
- Obey work zone speed limits.
- Pay attention to work zone signs.
- Do not tailgate other vehicles, leave plenty of room.
- If you know road construction is taking place on your usual route, plan ahead.
