Warm Weather Means That It’s Time to Watch Out for Dog Bites

After the long, cold winter, we’re encouraged to spend more time outdoors. While it feels great to enjoy ourselves in neighborhoods, parks and other open spaces, it can lead to unpleasant encounters, especially when pet owners are not using proper care. Even a dog that is small or looks friendly can cause serious injuries or infections. Making assumptions or letting your guard down could turn a fun outing into a lasting problem.

The ASPCA recommends some measures to lessen the likelihood of an attack when around dogs, including:

  • Be aware of warning signs — In some situations, a dog that is preparing to bite tries to make itself look larger by raising its ears and puffing out its fur. Conversely, a dog that crouches down might be nervous or confused and likely to attack someone. Any canine movements that seem out of the ordinary should put you on your guard.
  • Seek the pet owner’s permission before contact — Children and their parents should be especially cautious when an unfamiliar pet approaches. It’s a natural reaction for a boy and girl to pet or cuddle with a cute dog, but they should always check with the person handling the animal to see if it is safe to do so.
  • Stay away from unattended dogs — Some people choose to let their dogs run unleashed in open areas, even if prohibited by law. When this happens, it’s best to stay away. Likewise, reaching to pet a dog behind a fence or in a car with an open window could be dangerous because the dog might act to protect its territory.

Depending on where you are, recovering damages for injuries from dog bites might depend on demonstrating that the owner was aware of the animal’s dangerous nature. Consulting with an experienced personal injury attorney should give you the information you need to decide whether to bring a claim.
