Why You Should Seek Medical Attention After an Accident

Due to shock, adrenaline and concern for others, accident victims don’t always behave in their own best interest. Instead of getting care for themselves, they may insist that everything is okay in an attempt to avoid conflict or embarrassment. However, seeking medical attention after an accident — especially one that involves trauma — is crucial.

Motor vehicle collisions, falls, sports injuries and encounters with falling objects or chemical substances are some common forms of accidents that can result in serious injuries. While injuries like broken bones and open wounds may be immediately apparent, others can be less obvious. If these injuries go unnoticed and untreated, they can worsen over time. What appears to be a minor injury may turn into a life-threatening condition.

Some types of illnesses or injuries that may not be readily apparent after an accident are:

  • Internal bleeding — Blunt force trauma can inflict serious damage without causing an open wound. Internal organs such as the spleen, kidneys or liver may bleed into an injured person’s abdomen for some time before abdominal swelling or other noticeable symptoms appear.
  • Closed head injury — A blow to the head may be serious even if an injured person seems to feel fine afterward. A subdural hematoma, or brain bleed, isn't readily apparent, but if not diagnosed quickly, permanent damage or death may result.
  • Traumatic brain injury — Not all concussions result in a loss of consciousness or cognitive impairment. But any concussion should be treated seriously, and the victim should be checked for a traumatic brain injury.
  • Whiplash — Whiplash is a neck injury that occurs when a person’s head is flung back and forth with force, usually in a rear-end car crash. Neck ligaments and tissues may be overextended, resulting in headaches, numbness or stiffness in the back and shoulders.
  • Spinal cord injury — Spinal trauma should always be suspected among individuals involved in car crashes, ladder falls or other traumatic accidents. These injuries may be exacerbated as a person moves around and goes about their life. A herniated disc, nerve damage or even paralysis may result.
  • Fractures — What at first feels like a bruise or sprain may actually be a minor fracture. Walking on a fracture or otherwise using a fractured body part may make healing difficult or complete healing impossible.
  • Emotional trauma — Accident victims may experience delayed-onset emotional issues such as depression, anxiety or other effects consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Seeing a doctor after an accident may save you from suffering down the line, and obtaining a prompt medical report is essential if you hope to receive compensation from an insurance claim. If it cannot be shown that your injury was caused by the accident in question, you may be left to pay for your medical bills on your own.
