Voluntary Chantix Recall: What We Know!

(The information used in this post was taken from FDA.gov to ensure the highest level of accuracy for our readers.)

In the last week, Pfizer has issued a voluntary recall for all lots of Chantix 0.5 mg and 1 mg tablets due to findings of nitrosamine, N-nitroso-varenicline, at levels above the approved FDA intake limit.

The FDA reports that long-term ingestion of N-nitroso-varenicline is unfortunately linked to increased cancer risks in humans – with that said, the FDA has released a statement saying there is ‘no immediate risk to patients’ who are currently or who formerly took this product.

Nitrosamines can be found in both water and different foods, like grilled meats (steak, hamburgers, etc.) as well as in dairy products like milk and cheese and also vegetables. Everyone is and has been exposed to a certain level of nitrosamines – however, the difference here is that the level at which humans who used Chantix were exposed was far too high and was deemed unacceptable by the FDA.

In a statement, Pfizer said that people who are currently taking the type of Chantix that falls into the parameters of the recall should continue to take their recalled medicine until “their pharmacist provides a replacement or their doctor prescribes a different treatment”.

“The health benefits of stopping smoking outweigh the cancer risk from the nitrosamine impurity in varenicline,” said Pfizer.

Even though the FDA has issued a recall, Pfizer says people can continue to take Chantix.

Pfizer recalled lots of the anti-smoking drug this past July and has since expanded it to additional lots. Patients who’d like to dispose of their recalled tablets are being asked to contact Stericycle Inc., for instructions on how to properly return their product and get reimbursed for the cost.
